Language of Dance Plates

THE HISTORY
Over the past fifteen years I have been compiling a library of quick sketches from watching live performances of dance. A dancer's single movement could generate five or ten sketches from my pen trying to capture the particular feel of the move on paper. Several years ago I was approached by a studio dance instructor and she asked me what the rest of the dance was from that particular piece. Later that week I brought a box full of the napkin sketches to her. Within a matter of minutes she used them to lay out several dances! Later that year we collaborated for a show and she danced them during the show.
By this time there were several thousand quick sketches. I spent several weeks laying them out on the studio floor and categorizing them for each letter of the alphabet. These choices were somewhat arbitrary but predominately based on how a glyph impressed on me its charactor and attitude.
The Language of Dance glyphs are commissioned in the form of a person's name, a quote or poem. The sculptures are made of pure copper and the imagry hand painted on each piece. These works have arrived in more birthday and anniversary gifts than I can count and it makes me happy to know I am not alone in the fascination of how dance movement can relate to the eye and emotion to so many people.
